Well, here I am, once again, the bringer of bad news. Here I am wide awake in the early morning hours, unable to sleep, unable to rest, unable to forget. If you haven't figured it out by now, my mom died this morning (the picture above is my mom in High School). She is gone. How is it possible for things to have progressed so quickly? 3 weeks ago we had no idea things were this serious. 2 weeks ago we learned that she had cancer, 2 days ago we learned that it was terminal. The doctors said she had less than 6 months to live. Their calculations were way off.Have you ever felt disconnected from your surroundings? That's how I feel right now. I am living in a state of denial because otherwise I could not function. Why does so much sorrow and so much hurt have to come to my family? Why can't we just live happily ever after like characters in fairy tales? But that is not possible. Life never works like it does in fairy tales. Sometimes the bad guys DO win, and often the hero dies. . .
But amidst all of the feelings and lack of feelings, I can only wonder, what will come of my dad? My dad may not be a man of many words, but he loves his family, and he loves his wife. I've only seen my dad cry once, and that was after the death of my brother. But I heard him cry this morning when he called to tell me what had happened. How will he survive? How will he get on in the day to day things that my mother always did? Every day he will wake up in an empty bed, reminded of what he is missing. Every day he will have to do the things that my mom always did, pay bills, do taxes, run errands, cook, clean, drive my sisters around. Each time, he will be reminded of what is gone.
Then there is the rest of my family. I can't speak for my other siblings, but my mom for me was the center of the home. I always wanted to be where she was, so I could talk to her, hear her voice. I called her at least once a week, often times more. I called her when I needed advice, when I had a problem, when something exciting happened, when I was sad, and I even called her just because, just because I was walking home from school and had time, just because I felt like talking to her. My mom has been such a big part of my life, I can't imagine how I will get through the rest of it without her. She helped me come to terms with my brother's death, but who will help me come to term with hers?

Rachel, I'm so sorry for your loss. It is a real shock to see how quickly things progressed. It was good to hear your mother last month. She spoke about Clarence and Derek and had a firm assured knowledge and belief in life after life. When I spoke to her last week, she seemed tired but not scared. I'm sure her faith helped her and I'm pretty confident her greatest wish is that her daughters would share her faith and have the peace in this world that comes from the reality of the Gospel of Christ.

Thanks for your comment. Its not the belief in life after life that I have a problem with, its belief in life after death for those who are still living. I've been through this before and it was so hard. It changed me, at first made me angry at the world because they didn't understand my pain. Now that I've come to terms with it (though it still causes me pain), I lose my mom who was always there for me. Its the fear of what is to come for ME that gets me, worries me. I have complete faith and confidence that she is happy and well.
Rachel,
What sad and shocking news. The grief you share with your sisters and dad must feel unbearable. Most people will never understand how deep this can hurt and change your life. That change can be frightning. I'm so sorry. Please remember that we are your family also and that we love you. You can work with your dad and sisters to cope with this and when that is not enough, ask for help from others. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I am so sorry this happened to your family. I can't even imagine the loss, but if you ever need a listening ear or a hug, I'm there for you. This promise is good for at least ten years. :)

Rachel, I really don't have anything to say to help, to make you feel better, or anything. When I heard how bad everything was, I couldn't help thinking of your dad and sisters and how they would continue without her at home. When I found out today, I cried for all of you. Just know that there are many people thinking of you all and her.
Oh Rachel, I'm so sorry... what a blow to come to your family that has already experienced a great loss. Our prayers are with you and your family at this time.
"13 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him."
Rachel, I don't know what to say other than when I heard and as I have thought about it I came to believe that Karen knew her family would be ok or she wouldn't have chosen to go. She would sacrifice anything for her kids and no way would she allow herself to go unless she felt and knew that they were going to be ok. I know that if I was given the choice to face being that sick or going "home" in the company of my son/family member I would choose "home". It sucks for those of us left behind but always remember that's what family is for. Love you

There are really no words to convey sorrow, but I appreciate your expression of love on your blog. What a beautiful tribute to your mother. She will be missed and I am so sorry for what you are going through. I hope and pray that you and your family will rely on one another and God for strength, and when that's not enough, there are many praying for you. Never forget that you are loved and not forgotten.
I am very sad to hear about your mom. I cannot imagine losing a parent and I am not sure I want to yet. I am sorry you had to experience that at such a young age. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the blog about what you are going through. I hope you know that you are in our thoughts and prayers and I am sure in the thoughts and prayers of many others. I know your family will work through this, it won't be easy, but I know it will happen.
